How do we refute the claim of skeptics regarding errors in the noble Hadiths of the two Sahihs,

0:05

because they were written down two hundred years later?

0:10

My good people, these matters...

0:13

...the claim that the writing down of Hadith came late, so what guarantees there are no errors?

0:18

Whether they exist or not, and so forth...

0:20

Mind you, even the Noble Quran was written down later,

0:24

not just Hadith.

0:26

The reality of the matter is that when the Noble Quran was being written down...

0:30

...whenever revelation came to the Prophet ﷺ, he had scribes of revelation,

0:36

nearly forty-three Companions (RA) served as scribes of revelation,

0:40

including the Four Caliphs, Mu'adh ibn Jabal, Ubayy ibn Ka'b, Zayd ibn Thabit, 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, and others.

0:46

When something was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ, he would call whichever scribe was present and say, "Write this down," and that was it.

0:53

Everyone received the Quran directly from the Prophet ﷺ by ear.

0:57

No one read it from written copies; they learned it orally.

1:01

After the Prophet's ﷺ death, during the Wars of Apostasy, seventy reciters were martyred—

1:09

memorizers of the Book of Allah ﷻ.

1:11

'Umar (RA) advised Abu Bakr (RA) to compile the Quran.

1:15

Eventually, Abu Bakr (RA) agreed and tasked Zayd ibn Thabit (RA) to collect it, so he compiled the Quran.

1:21

It was kept in Abu Bakr's house and not distributed; people continued to learn the Quran orally.

1:28

In the time of Uthman (RA), when disagreement arose among the Muslims regarding recitations and other matters,

1:34

Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman came and told Uthman, "Save Muhammad's Ummah! They're nearly fighting over the Quran."

1:41

So it's said: Abu Bakr compiled the Quran, and Uthman united the people upon it.

1:46

So he ordered its compilation. When Uthman compiled it, he made only six copies—just six:

1:52

one master copy kept with Uthman (RA), one sent to Yemen, one to...

1:58

Makkah, one to Sham, one to Iraq, and one to Egypt.

2:01

That was all—just one standard text. People relied on learning through listening.

2:06

There were no written copies like today's widely available ones

2:09

with everyone having a Mushaf at home. Everything was based on oral learning.

2:14

Some time later, some people began writing a Mushaf for themselves only,

2:19

but everyone still relied on oral transmission—and so did Hadiths.

2:22

Hadiths were recorded in the Prophet’s ﷺ time on a small scale, as they mostly relied on oral transmission.

2:28

'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (RA) said, "I used to write everything the Prophet ﷺ said, but Quraysh stopped me."

2:36

Some Quraysh elders told him, "You write down everything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,

2:40

yet he is human, speaking in pleasure and anger." So he stopped writing.

2:46

"Then I went to the Prophet ﷺ and told him. He said, 'Write!

2:50

By Allah, nothing comes from this but the truth.' ﷺ So 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr used to write.

2:56

Abu Hurairah (RA) said, "None of the Companions of Allah's Messenger ﷺ narrated more Hadiths than me except Abdullah ibn Amr,

3:03

for he used to write, while I did not."

3:06

And in Sahihayn, when the Prophet ﷺ gave a sermon in Arafah, a man called Abu Shah came

3:12

and said, "O Messenger of Allah, write it for me; I couldn't memorize it." He ﷺ said, "Write for Abu Shah."

3:18

Also, the Prophet's ﷺ Hadith was written down, but there were no compiled Hadith books.

3:22

just as there was no printed Quran, and learning was through oral transmission.

3:26

All relied on oral transmission, hence the saying: "Don't take Quran from a Mus-hafi,"

3:33

"nor Hadith from a Suhufi."

3:36

All relied on direct transmission and learning by listening.

3:39

The Quran and Sunnah were equal in this regard.

3:41

and the narrators of the Quran were the narrators of the Sunnah.

3:45

What happened was that during the reign of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz (RH),

3:49

Umar ordered Abu Bakr ibn Hazm and Muhammad ibn Shihab al-Zuhri to compile

3:55

as much of the Sunnah as possible into a book.

3:59

So Abu Bakr ibn Hazm compiled, and Muhammad ibn Shihab compiled.

4:04

Then after that, people began paying attention to the matter of writing down Hadith,

4:08

but oral transmission remained key. Scholars distinguished memory retention from written, most relying on memory.

4:15

Very few relied on written accuracy; most relied on memory.

4:20

People memorized and relied on memory in transmitting Hadith.

4:23

As for the idea that errors might have occurred—no, people exerted immense effort into Hadith; they scrutinised every word.

4:31

Rest assured, they would pause over a single word to ensure the accuracy of the Hadith.

4:36

Abdullah ibn Umar (RA),

4:39

when he narrated from the Prophet ﷺ the Hadith: "Islam is built upon five [pillars]:"

4:43

"The testimony of faith, prayer, Zakat, Hajj, and fasting Ramadan."

4:49

Someone said: "Fasting Ramadan and Hajj?"

4:50

He said: "No, Hajj and fasting Ramadan." See the difference?

4:54

That was their level of precision.

4:55

And when the Prophet ﷺ taught Al-Bara (RA) the supplication before sleep,

5:01

he said: "...Your Book which You revealed, and Your Prophet whom You sent."

5:05

Al-Bara repeated: "...Your Book which You revealed, and Your Messenger whom You sent."

5:08

He ﷺ said: "No, 'Your Prophet whom You sent.'"

5:10

Such precision: "Prophet" versus "Messenger."

5:13

They were extremely meticulous about this matter.

5:16

And if someone made a mistake, they would note: "So-and-so added such a word," or

5:21

"omitted such a word"—all recorded in Hadith books.

5:23

Anyone who reads Hadith thoroughly will find: "So-and-so added the letter *wa* (and)," and so on.

5:29

"And so-and-so did not mention the *wa*; so-and-so mentioned it."

5:35

One said, 'Abdullah,' and another said, 'Ubaydullah.' It is extremely precise.

5:40

So claims that they made errors—this is empty talk.

5:43

These claims are baseless, empty claims,

5:46

from people who do not respect the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ nor know its worth.

5:50

As for the scholars, they cared for the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and transmitted it accurately,

5:58

verifying it meticulously. No nation has ever evaluated its narrators like the Muslim nation.

6:07

It spoke candidly about itself: 'This Hadith is authentic; this Hadith is weak.'

6:12

'This narrator is trustworthy.' This [scrutiny] exists in no other nation except the nation of Islam.

6:17

It preserved the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Noble Quran.

6:21

meaning, in terms of mass transmission from generation to generation.

6:25

The difference between the Quran and the Sunnah is that the Quran is only transmitted by mass concurrence,

6:33

whereas a Sunnah report might be transmitted by one, two, three, or four—that is the only difference.

6:40

Yet regarding precision, they were so diligent that no one could attribute a lie to the Prophet ﷺ.

6:46

Sufyan al-Thawri said, 'If someone lied against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the West,

6:53

he would be exposed in the East by morning.'

6:56

Now, when we mentioned 'Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi'ah, for whom the Prophet ﷺ used to pray: "O Allah, save 'Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi'ah!"

7:05

'Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi'ah (RA) was from the Muhajirun of Quraysh, a noble Companion. His grandson was a liar!

7:12

Aban ibn Abi 'Ayyash was a liar—the grandson of 'Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi'ah.

7:18

Shu'bah ibn Al-Hajjaj used to walk in the streets, in the markets,

7:23

shouting, "O people, Aban ibn Abi 'Ayyash is a liar!" Exposing him publicly because he lied against the Prophet ﷺ,

7:31

to the extent

7:37

that Hammad

7:42

ibn Zayd (RH) related:

7:47

"I went to Shu'bah and said to him, 'O Abu Bistam, go easy on the man.

7:54

His grandfather was a noble Companion, his family is renowned, he is elderly—enough, you have exposed him!

8:01

Wherever you go: "Aban is a liar!"' He replied, 'He lies against the Messenger ﷺ!'

8:05

I said, 'Well, everyone knows now, enough!' So he promised me he would refrain from him.

8:13

A day or two later, we were attending a funeral. While they were preparing the grave and people had gathered,

8:21

Shu'bah spotted Aban, so he called out to Hammad ibn Zayd,

8:27

'O Abu Isma'il, I take back my promise!'"

8:31

"I take it back! O people, Aban is a liar!"

8:35

pointing at him, "Aban is a liar!

8:37

O Abu Isma'il, this is religion!

8:41

Religion! No joking around, this is religion!"

8:43

He said, "This is religion."

8:46

So no one could lie about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

8:49

And if someone erred in a narration, everyone knew—that is, the master scholars of Hadith,

8:55

the 'ilal scholars would say, "He erred here, added this, or omitted that"—immediately.

9:00

They gathered all Hadith routes and memorized them.

9:03

So claiming "maybe they made mistakes" is baseless, unsubstantiated talk.

9:09

Give us an example! Give us an example of a mistaken Hadith or Hadiths!

9:16

Rather than just saying, "Maybe they erred." Well, maybe you are not your mother's son!

9:23

Maybe you are a liar! Maybe you are a thief! These are mere accusations

9:27

thrown at people like this. Unacceptable! "Maybe!"

9:30

Give us proof! "The onus of proof is on the claimant."

9:33

This religion is preserved by Allah ﷻ.

9:36

When Sufyan al-Thawri mentioned this, he then recited:

9:39

“Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.” (Quran 15:9)

9:41

"...will surely guard it." He said:

9:42

"If a man were to lie in the West, he would be exposed in the East."

9:46

“Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.” (Quran 15:9)

9:49

"...are its guardians."

9:49

And Allah ﷻ knows best.

9:50

May Allah ﷻ send peace and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
