The First Row in Prayer

21 views 16h ago 3 min Fiqh EN subs AR subs
Sheikh Sulayman ar-RuhailyProfessor, Islamic University of Madinah
Description
Sheikh Sulayman ar-Ruhaily answers two important questions. First: is it better to build a mosque alone or contribute to a larger one? He explains that the best choice is whatever brings the most benefit to Muslims — reward increases with greater benefit. Second: is the first row far from the imam better, or the second row close to him? The Sheikh is clear: the first row is always best, even if far from the imam. He cites the hadith warning that a person who keeps lagging behind the first row will eventually miss prayer entirely and fall into sin.

Is it better for a person to build a mosque alone?

0:04

Or to join his brothers to build a bigger mosque?

0:10

Allah's bounty is vast. And the best is what's most beneficial.

0:17

The best is what's most beneficial.

0:20

So if that is best for Muslims

0:24

Building a small mosque by oneself is better.

0:30

If it's best for Muslims to build a big mosque many gather in, it's better.

0:36

Because the reward increases.

0:38

with the greater benefit.

0:41

Yes. Whoever builds a mosque alone will have the reward of the mosque.

0:49

And whoever participates.

0:51

In building the mosque, he gets his share of its reward.

0:59

But which is better? We say: The better is what is more beneficial.

1:05

If both are equal in benefit.

1:09

then it is better to build it himself.

1:14

To build it himself, and it is rare for both to be equal in benefit. Yes.

1:20

May Allah ﷻ reward you well. May Allah ﷻ preserve you.

1:23

Which is better: the first row, far from the imam?

1:28

Or the second row, close to the imam?

1:34

There is no doubt that the first row is best, even if far from the imam.

1:43

"The best rows for men are the first."

1:48

The correct view is that the right is better than the left.

1:53

Meaning: the right of the first row is better than its left.

2:00

And the left side of the first row is better than the second row.

2:06

And the right side of the second row is better than its left side.

2:11

And so on.

2:13

What is required of the believer is to hasten to the first row.

2:19

The Prophet ﷺ said.

2:22

"A man keeps lagging behind the first row until held back."

2:29

"Allah ﷻ [places him] in the Fire." The scholars said that the point is.

2:36

If a Muslim hastens to the first row.

2:40

he preserves the prayer and is spared sin.

2:44

But if he falls behind the first row, he may soon miss the prayer's start.

2:53

Then he may end up arriving at the end of the prayer.

2:56

Then he may even pray at home. If that happens

3:01

He would be falling into sin and be blameworthy.

3:07

In any case, the answer to the question is this.

3:10

The first row is better than standing behind the imam

3:16

or in the second row behind him. Yes.
