What is the ruling on writing the name on a grave to identify its occupant?

0:07

The answer is that it is not permissible, for two reasons.

0:14

As for the first reason, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forbade writing on graves.

0:23

This is general; nothing is excluded from it.

0:28

As for the second reason, it is what the brother mentioned.

0:34

Namely, one may need to know say, his father's grave or his mother's.

0:42

For visitation, greeting, and supplication.

0:45

This need existed in the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

0:50

The need was there, and writing was possible, yet it was not done.

0:58

The grave used to be identified by a pebble or the like.

1:04

So such writing is not prescribed.

1:08

because the need for this existed in the Prophet ﷺ's time, and was feasible.

1:16

Yet the Prophet ﷺ did not do it.

1:20

That shows it is not prescribed and is not permissible.

1:26

A person should mark his loved one's grave with a clear marker.

1:34

by its location, and by the number of graves.

1:39

and by placing a pebble or something similar.

1:42

That is sufficient. Allah ﷻ knows best.
