I learned of evil, not for evil, but to guard against it.

0:05

Whoever cannot tell evil from good will fall into it.

0:10

Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (RA) used to say.

0:16

People used to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about good.

0:24

while I asked him about evil, for fear that it might reach me.

0:32

No. It is not enough to know good alone; you must know evil too.

0:39

To avoid it, because if you do not know evil, you will fall into it.

0:46

I learned of evil, not for evil, but to guard against it.

0:52

Whoever cannot tell evil from good will fall into it.

0:57

So know: this is what Hudhayfah (RA) intended.

1:00

When he asked about evil, it was not out of love for evil.

1:05

Rather, it was so it would become clear to him what he should do.

1:11

In this situation.

1:13

I used to ask him about evil. Why? For fear it might befall me.

1:22

Then the Prophet ﷺ mentioned to him what decline and division would come.

1:32

Hudhayfah (RA) asked, What should I do if that happens to me?

1:40

He said: Adhere to the Muslim community and its imam.

1:46

Adhere to the Muslim community and its imam.

1:51

If strife and division occur.

1:54

And there is talk among the people as is happening now.

2:00

Then adhere to the imam and the Muslim community.

2:06

So you may be saved from it.

2:09

Adhere to the Muslim community and its imam.

2:16

Hudhayfah (RA) said, O Messenger of Allah, what if no community or imam?

2:23

Meaning, there is division, and there is no community or imam.

2:29

He said, Then keep away from all those factions.

2:33

"Even if you bite onto the root of a tree and die that way."

2:40

This shows that a person should not enter fitan.

2:45

As much as he can, he should avoid them.

2:49

He does not enter fitan. Rather, he keeps away from them.

2:54

Under any circumstance, he does not enter them.

2:59

That is safer for him, and it is done in one of two ways.

3:03

If there is a Muslim community and an imam for the Muslims.

3:09

then let him be with them to be saved from evil and discord.

3:13

The second case is when there is no community and no imam.

3:18

There is no might nor power except with Allah ﷻ.

3:21

So the solution is to avoid fitan and its people, to save yourself.

3:30

Even if some harm touches you yourself, even then.

3:35

"Even if you must bite a tree root until death comes to you in that state."

3:46

In short, the Muslim should note this.
