He (RH) said:

0:02

The thirty-first Hadith:

0:03

On the authority of Abu al-Abbas Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (RA),

0:06

that he said: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ

0:10

and said, "O Messenger of Allah,

0:12

direct me to a deed which, if I do it, Allah will love me and people will love me."

0:16

He ﷺ said, "Renounce the world and Allah will love you,

0:19

Renounce the world and Allah will love you,

0:21

and renounce what people possess and the people will love you."

0:24

A Hasan Hadith, related by Ibn Majah and others with a good chain.

0:28

Yes, this Hadith is about Zuhd, and it is the foundation of Zuhd.

0:31

Zuhd is not merely about abundant worship.

0:34

It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud, Abdullah bin Mas'ud (RA),

0:37

that he came to his companions

0:40

and said, "Today you pray and fast more than the companions of the Prophet ﷺ"

0:45

yet they were better than you."

0:48

They asked, "Why is that, O Abu Abdur-Rahman?"

0:50

He replied, "Because they were more detached from this world than you,

0:55

and more desirous of the Hereafter."

0:57

For Zuhd is not merely outward deeds; rather, it is an action of the heart.

1:02

Thus, caring for the actions of the heart is of utmost importance.

1:05

Many scholars have mentioned

1:07

that those who focus on books of fiqh and usul

1:09

might become preoccupied with outward deeds, neglecting the states of the heart,

1:13

and nothing returns them to the actions of the heart except the Quran.

1:16

Thus, reciting the Quran abundantly and reflecting on its meanings,

1:19

and studying the lives of the early Companions (RA),

1:21

and foremost, the biography of the Prophet ﷺ and studying it,

1:25

is what softens the heart and fosters Zuhd in this world.

1:28

This Hadith clarifies that Zuhd is of two types: Zuhd in this world,

1:31

and Zuhd from what people possess.

1:33

As for zuhd in this world, whoever practices it, Allah ﷻ will love him.

1:38

Zuhd in this world means the heart is not attached to the world,

1:40

but rather attaches itself to Allah ﷻ.

1:43

A person may have his hands full of worldly possessions,

1:47

as with some Companions like Uthman and Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf (RA) and others.

1:50

And among the later scholars, Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak, mentioned earlier.

1:53

Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak was among the most ascetic people of his era, and he authored a large book, printed long ago, called Kitab al-Zuhd.

2:01

The jurist-scholars admired the zuhd of Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak among the later scholars, because wealth was in his hands, yet he practiced zuhd.

2:09

This zuhd —

2:11

His detachment from wealth is shown by giving charity whenever the occasion arose, without withholding.

2:15

This is zuhd: it is not in not earning wealth, but in spending it,

2:20

and in the ease of giving it away.

2:22

The second type of zuhd is abstaining from what people possess.

2:25

Whoever abstains from what people possess, people will love him.

2:27

Abstaining from what people possess means, first, to not envy their wealth.

2:31

So if someone possesses wealth or any of the worldly goods...

2:36

“And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.” (Quran 20:131)

2:40

Being indifferent to it leads to indifference toward what others possess.

2:45

The second matter is indifference to what people compete for in terms of honor and authority.

2:51

Whoever is indifferent to authority and honor, through which people seek prestige, such as being an eloquent speaker...

2:57

...since it is prestigious to be a speaker around whom people gather and crowd,

3:02

and who are listened to attentively when they speak.

3:04

Whoever is indifferent to that will be loved by people.

3:07

But some may be tested with it. Imam Ahmad said, "I am a man who was tested with that."

3:12

But if you are tested, then this is a matter that, as mentioned in the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ,

3:17

...came to you without you asking or aspiring for it.

3:20

Whoever does these two things, Allah ﷻ will love him, and people will love him for that.

3:25

Yes.

3:27

Peace be upon you.
