0:07

And know that the servant is commanded to hold fast to the revelation,

0:11

due to the saying of Allah ﷻ:

0:13

“So adhere to that which is revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path.” (Quran 43:43)

0:19

because the Quran is a clarification for all things,

0:22

and a guidance, mercy, and glad tidings for the Muslims,

0:25

as Allah ﷻ said: “And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification”

0:30

“And [mention] the Day when We will resurrect among every nation a witness over them from themselves [i.e., their prophet]. And We will bring you, [O Muḥammad], as a witness over these [i.e., your nation]. And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims.”

0:35

“Indeed, Allāh orders justice and good conduct and giving [help] to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.” (Quran 16:89-90)

0:36

0:38

He has left us on a clear path, its night and day are alike,

0:47

and he guided his Ummah to the best of what he knew for them,

0:52

and warned them against the worst of what he knew for them.

0:55

On the authority of Abu al-Darda' al-Ansari (RA),

1:01

he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

1:07

“By Allah, I have left you on a clear path, its night and day are alike.”

1:14

Narrated by Ibn Majah, and its chain of transmission is Hasan.

1:17

Narrated by Ibn Majah.

1:19

Narrated by Ibn Majah, and its chain of transmission is Hasan.

1:22

And on the authority of Abdullah bin Amr bin al-Aas (RA),

1:27

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

1:31

“Indeed, there was no prophet before me except that it was his duty

1:37

to guide his Ummah to the best of what he knew for them,”

1:43

and warn them of the worst of what he knows for them. Narrated by Muslim.

1:48

And he fully explained what people need in their religion,

1:55

so they would need nothing beyond his explanation.

1:58

On the authority of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (RA) that he said:

2:03

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left us,

2:08

and there is no bird that flies with its wings but that we have knowledge of it.”

2:13

Narrated by Ibn Hibban, and its chain of transmission is authentic.

2:17

So we should not burden ourselves after him with what does not concern us,

2:21

for those before us were only destroyed

2:25

by their excessive questioning and their opposition to their prophets.

2:30

Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) said:

2:34

“We have been forbidden from burdening ourselves.” Narrated by al-Bukhari.

2:38

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (RA) that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:

2:46

“Whatever I have forbidden you, avoid it;

2:48

and whatever I have commanded you, do of it what you can;

2:53

for those before you were only destroyed

2:56

...their excessive questioning and their disagreement with their Prophets."

3:01

Agreed upon.

3:03

And we do not act in matters of religion based on opinion

3:08

that is not supported by a source from the Sharia,

3:13

following the advice of Sahl ibn Hunaif (RA),

3:19

that he said, "O people, suspect your opinion regarding your religion.

3:26

I saw myself on the day of Abu Jandal,

3:31

if I could have rejected the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,

3:36

I would have rejected it."

3:41

Agreed upon.

3:42

The author, may Allah grant him success,

3:45

mentioned another section in which he calls to another of the best endeavors, saying: "And know that the servant

3:54

is commanded to hold fast to the revelation,"

3:57

which is to cling firmly to it and adhere to it.

4:04

He said, due to the statement of Allah ﷻ:

4:06

“So adhere to that which is revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path.” (Quran 43:43)

4:12

So the verse is an explicit command

4:14

to hold fast to the revelation, meaning to strongly cling to it and adhere to it.

4:20

Then he explained the reason for this by saying: "Because the Quran is a clarification of all things,"

4:26

and it is guidance, mercy, and glad tidings for the Muslims,

4:29

As He ﷻ says: 'And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things.'

4:35

And 'clarification' means explanation.

4:41

So the Quran clarifies in the most complete manner of clarification and explanation

4:47

what people need in their religion of immediate and future benefits.

4:54

Then he said: 'And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

4:58

has left us on a clear path, whose night is like its day,

5:02

and he guided his Ummah to the best of what he knew for them,

5:06

and warned them against the worst of what he knew for them.'

5:10

So what came in the revelation of the Quran and Sunnah contains the clarification of good

5:19

for the people, encouraging them towards it, and the clarification of evil

5:23

as a warning against it.

5:25

Then he mentioned what confirms this,

5:28

from what he established, that the Prophet ﷺ

5:31

left us on a clear path,

5:33

and guided us to the best of what he knew for us,

5:36

and warned us against the worst of what he knew for us.

5:39

So he mentioned the Hadith of Abu al-Darda' al-Ansari (RA):

5:43

"By Allah, I have left you on a clear path, its night and day are alike."

5:49

The Hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah, and its chain of transmission is Hasan.

5:54

"Al-Bayda'" is an adjective for an omitted noun, estimated by what suits it,

6:01

"al-bayda'" is an adjective for an omitted noun, estimated

6:06

by what suits it, such as "al-mahajjah" (the path).

6:11

And this became famous in the speech of the scholars, that they mention "al-mahajjah al-bayda'"

6:18

as an expression of the Sunnah and the religion that the Prophet ﷺ brought from his Lord.

6:24

However, the mention of this wording is not established in any of his ﷺ Hadiths.

6:31

But the attribute mentioned in his saying "the white"...

6:35

...is fitting for this described object, which is the path.

6:39

Then he mentioned the Hadith of 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin al-'As (RA) in Sahih Muslim,

6:44

in which: "There was no prophet before me except that it was his duty to guide his nation...

6:51

...to the best of what he knew for them, and warn them of the worst of what he knew for them."

6:56

Then he said: "And he explained what people need with a complete explanation,

7:01

so they would dispense with anything else through his explanation."

7:05

On the authority of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (RA), he said:

7:08

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left us...

7:12

...and there is not a bird that flaps its wings except that we have knowledge of it."

7:17

Narrated by Ibn Hibban, and its chain of transmission is authentic.

7:20

So there is nothing that creation needs explained, whether in matters of religion or worldly affairs,

7:27

except that the Prophet ﷺ explained it to us with a satisfying explanation.

7:33

He said: "So do not burden yourselves after him with what does not concern us,"

7:37

"for those before us were only destroyed by their excessive questioning and their disagreement with their prophets."

7:45

Delving deeply into researching what a servant does not need and being strict about it is part of the forbidden takalluf.

7:53

And in Al-Bukhari, from the hadith of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA),

7:57

he said: "We were forbidden from takalluf."

8:01

And such a statement is considered marfu' according to the more correct of the two opinions of the scholars.

8:06

Thus, the implied meaning is: "The Prophet ﷺ forbade us from takalluf,"

8:13

so among the prohibitions that the Prophet ﷺ forbade them from is takalluf,

8:20

which is delving too deeply, being overly strict, and seeking what a servant does not need

8:26

and what does not serve his interests.

8:29

Then he said ﷺ - in the hadith he mentioned:

8:35

"For those before you were only destroyed by their excessive questioning and their disagreement with their prophets."

8:42

Agreed upon. Then the author said:

8:45

“And we do not act in the matter of religion based on opinion

8:48

that is not supported by a source from the Sharia,”

8:52

meaning it does not refer back to the rules and objectives of Sharia,

8:56

and this is what is called blameworthy opinion.

9:00

The origin of opinion is derivation,

9:04

the origin of opinion is derivation,

9:08

through rational examination.

9:13

And it is of two types: one is praiseworthy opinion,

9:18

praiseworthy opinion — that which the text can bear and evidence supports.

9:24

That which the text can bear and evidence supports.

9:29

And the other is blameworthy opinion,

9:32

which is that which the text cannot bear nor is supported by evidence,

9:37

that which the text cannot bear nor is supported by evidence.

9:43

Whatever falls under blameworthy opinion is not to be acted upon in religion.

9:48

Whatever falls under blameworthy opinion is not to be acted upon in religion.

9:52

He said, following the advice of Sahl ibn Hunayf (RA), that he said:

9:59

"O people, suspect your opinion regarding your religion."

10:05

Meaning, suspect the blameworthy opinion,

10:08

which is that which contradicts what the Prophet ﷺ brought.

10:13

So whatever comes to the minds of creation that contradicts

10:18

what the Prophet ﷺ brought of the religion,

10:22

should be suspected, such that the servant abandons it and pays no attention to it.

10:30

He said, "I saw myself on the day of Abu Jandal,

10:34

and if I could have rejected the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would have."

10:40

Meaning, "If I had been able to reject the command of the Prophet ﷺ back then, I would have done so."

10:47

And the day of Abu Jandal was the day when

10:50

Abu Jandal, the son of Suhayl ibn Amr (RA), came.

10:55

to the Prophet ﷺ during the Treaty of al-Hudaybiyyah,

11:00

when he was drawing up the treaty with his father, Suhayl ibn 'Amr.

11:05

For when the Prophet ﷺ began

11:09

to write down the reconciliation agreed between him and the polytheists,

11:15

and the leader of the polytheists in that was Suhayl ibn 'Amr,

11:19

his son Abu Jandal ibn Suhayl ibn 'Amr came,

11:24

fleeing from the polytheists, stumbling in his chains.

11:30

The Prophet ﷺ had agreed with Suhayl and those with him

11:36

on certain terms, including that whoever came

11:40

to the Prophet ﷺ from the polytheists as a Muslim,

11:45

the Prophet ﷺ would return him to his people.

11:51

When this agreement was reached,

11:54

and the scribe began to write the treaty between them, he came.

11:59

Abu Jandal [arrived] then, so the Prophet ﷺ requested

12:06

of Suhayl, who was Abu Jandal's father, to let him keep him.

12:11

But Suhayl said, "This is the first one you must honor the treaty for."

12:16

Meaning, this is the first person to fall under the condition we agreed upon:

12:21

that if anyone from the polytheists comes to you as a Muslim,

12:25

you must return him to us.

12:29

When this situation occurred, the Prophet ﷺ returned him to them.

12:36

This weighed heavily on the Muslims, that someone should come

12:39

fleeing with his religion from the polytheists while in chains,

12:45

and then the Prophet ﷺ returns him to them.

12:49

At that moment, it occurred to the people

12:53

that what the Prophet ﷺ did was not the best course,

12:58

and that the right thing was not to return him to them.

13:01

But the Prophet ﷺ recognized benefits in that

13:06

which the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ did not fully comprehend at the time.

13:12

Sahl (RA) benefited from this incident,

13:18

in that a servant should doubt his own opinion

13:24

if it contradicts the religion.

13:28

So one should not abandon anything of the religion,

13:30

even if, from the perspective of opinion, one deems a certain view to be good,

13:36

for any opinion that contradicts the religion brought by the Prophet ﷺ

13:42

has no good in it.

13:45

And souls cannot rid themselves of desires

13:51

except by purely following the Prophet ﷺ.

13:56

For whoever purely follows the Prophet ﷺ,

14:01

these desires will find no foothold in his soul.

14:05

But as for one whose following of the Prophet ﷺ is weak,

14:09

his soul will then make it seem appealing to follow this opinion,

14:16

deeming it better than what the Prophet ﷺ brought.

14:20

At that point, the servant seeks excuses to reject what the Prophet ﷺ brought,

14:27

and interprets it in various ways,

14:31

And the servant is not safe from the bane of opposing the Prophet ﷺ,

14:37

for the consequence of blameworthy opinion leads to ruin,

14:41

even if the servant imagines that he is doing good.

14:45

Therefore, Ibn Taymiyyah the grandson and his companion Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned

14:50

that no one among the people rebelled

14:54

against his ruler who must be obeyed,

14:57

except that he fell into a greater evil than what he was fleeing from.

15:02

And this is a true testament that whoever relies on blameworthy opinion,

15:06

imagining that it would be better for him

15:11

than what the Prophet ﷺ brought,

15:13

then there is no good in it at that point.

15:16

And what the Prophet ﷺ brought

15:18

regarding this is patience with unjust leaders,

15:20

meaning oppression from rulers and sultans who...

15:24

...oppress. If it were to cross someone's mind to rebel against them,

15:30

and dispute with them, and repel the evil they are upon—of oppression and committing forbidden acts—thinking it is better for him,

15:37

then at that point, he should not pay attention to this passing thought,

15:41

and he should adhere to the religion brought by the Prophet ﷺ,

15:46

for indeed it has the safest outcome in this world and the Hereafter. Yes.
